What to Expect at a Gas Fireplace Service Appointment
A proper annual service is not a 10-minute visual check. From the moment we arrive, the visit follows a fixed protocol so nothing gets skipped. Here's how a typical 60–90 minute tune-up runs:
- Walk-through & symptoms. Before opening the unit, we ask how it's been running, when it was last serviced, and whether you've noticed any pilot or odor issues. Saves diagnostic time later.
- Shut off and disassembly. Gas off at the appliance valve, front glass removed, log set photographed in place (so it goes back exactly the same), then logs and burner pan out.
- Deep clean. Burner ports brushed, ember bed vacuumed, pilot hood and thermocouple/thermopile tips polished, blower squirrel cage cleaned.
- Component testing. Millivolt readings on thermocouple (target 25+ mV) and thermopile (target 300+ mV closed circuit). Gas pressure tested with manometer at the valve.
- Leak check. Every fitting from the shut-off to the burner brushed with soap solution and watched for bubbles. Non-negotiable on every visit.
- Reassemble & fire. Logs returned to manufacturer spec, glass reset with new gasket if needed, unit lit, flame pattern verified.
- Combustion test. Calibrated CO meter at the room, draft check at the vent termination.
- Written report. Photos of every checkpoint, millivolt readings, recommendations, and a service sticker on the unit with the next due date.
