We won't push you to replace a fireplace that can be repaired — but there's a point at which fixing isn't worth it. Here's the honest decision framework.
Repair makes sense when:
- The unit is under 15 years old
- Parts are still available from the manufacturer
- The repair is under 30–40% of replacement cost
- You like the look and it fits the room
Lean toward replacement when:
- The unit is 20+ years old and needs a major part (gas valve, control board)
- Parts are discontinued (especially Heatilator pre-2005, older Majestic standing pilot units)
- It's a B-vent unit that's killing your AC efficiency
- You want a remote, blower, or modern flame look the old unit can't do
- Multiple repairs in the last 2 years
Real numbers
A new direct-vent insert dropped into an existing opening runs $4,500–$8,500 installed. If your current repair is quoted over $1,500 on a 20-year-old unit, replacement usually wins on a 5-year math basis.
