We won't push you to replace a fireplace that can be repaired — but there's a point at which fixing isn't worth it. Here's the honest decision framework.

    Repair makes sense when:

    • The unit is under 15 years old
    • Parts are still available from the manufacturer
    • The repair is under 30–40% of replacement cost
    • You like the look and it fits the room

    Lean toward replacement when:

    • The unit is 20+ years old and needs a major part (gas valve, control board)
    • Parts are discontinued (especially Heatilator pre-2005, older Majestic standing pilot units)
    • It's a B-vent unit that's killing your AC efficiency
    • You want a remote, blower, or modern flame look the old unit can't do
    • Multiple repairs in the last 2 years

    Real numbers

A new direct-vent insert dropped into an existing opening runs $4,500–$8,500 installed. If your current repair is quoted over $1,500 on a 20-year-old unit, replacement usually wins on a 5-year math basis.
